Whilst I was recently in Mallorca, I was introduced to the work of Spanish photographer, Alberto Garcia-Alix. Alberto, who looks like the Iggy Pop of the photography world, started documenting the people and places of Spain in the post Franco period of the late 70’s & early 1980’s, when free expression became possible. Many of the intimate photographs are of his friends, some who, became well known in their own areas, such as Pedro Almodovar, the film director. Alberto’s subject’s are often dark and on the boundaries of social acceptability and the similarities with Almodovar’s film’s are obvious.
The poster for the exhibition in mallorca which first grabbed my attention.
