You can see she’s a beautiful girl, she’s a beautiful girl

I’ve just spent the last week sunning myself in Majorca and reading the fantastic book Just Kids, by Patti Smith about her life and relationship with the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

I’ve long been an admirer of Ms Smith but my admiration has reached new heights after reading this book. She is one of the most sincere, passionate and creative women of the 20th Century and reading her describe her enduring relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe, throughout their early years in New York as struggling artists, and more importantly in Roberts last months, was compelling and inspiring. Their love and mutual respect for each other never wavered and the book was written as a lasting promise to Robert in his dying days. The lady did him proud. Anybody interested in music, art, the New York punk and Factory scene will not be able to put this book down. In the words of the song written about her she likes to leave you hanging on her word!
