I’ve just been reading Hip Hotels book on New York, which is a city I can’t believe I haven’t visited yet, but am determined to resolve as soon as possible. Even my 17 year old son has spent some time in the big apple, so I’m well over due a trip.
Reading about the different areas within the city and the hotels in those areas, I came across Soho House, designed by my all time favourite designer, Isle Crawford and it occurred to me that I have never posted a blog about her work or should I say paid homage to her work, which let’s face it has shaped all of our style and the way in which we live. From her introduction into our homes through the launch of Elle Decoration in 1989, for which she was editor, to her consultancy work for M&S for their first stand alone home store in Newcastle, through to her influence on the rise & rise of the boutique hotel, Isle has influenced our style choices in so many ways.
My own personal style of vintage and antique pieces, mixed with kitsch bric a brac and contemporary design, was honed by hanging onto every image created & chosen by Isle, in those first editions of Elle Deco. When myself and Mr B bought our first home together in 1989, I practically counted down the days until I could get my hands on the next edition. Just to remind us of her genius here are a few of her best designs.
