One of my favourite independent shops is JunkShop who have two branches based In Didsbury, West Manchester and The Northern Quarter in the heart of the creative hub of Manchester city centre.
JunkShop has been trading for many years now, steered by the extremely talented Charlotte Keyworth. I first met Charlotte about five years ago when I started supplying her with vintage fabrics for an ethical clothing line that she had started. “Made in the Mill” uses recycled and reclaimed clothing and fabrics, all hand made at Islington Mill in Salford. The label is one of the contenders for the Observer Ethical Awards and if you want to nominate them, you can do so through their website or blog.
Junk was also awarded the 7th most unusual shop in Britain by The Guardian and richly deserves this award, the stock is diverse, unique and ever changing.
I made a trip into the Didsbury shop last week and these are just a few of the goodies that caught my eye. As well as the great retail experience at Junk you can also attend one of the many courses that run throughout the year, ranging from dress making, styling and simply learning your way around the basics of using a sewing machine.
