Just following on from the white and wood blog post I wrote recently, I was at a friends house yesterday who has recently decorated and simplified her lounge, with lovely tones of grey, white and Brassica by Farrow & Ball.
She was asking my opinion about some shelves for her chimney breast alcoves and I suggested some rustic wood, would add a lovely warmth to the room or some distress painted shelving, would add texture.
If you’re looking for shelving, it doesn’t have to be made for the purpose and you can always add some interest by using salvaged and recycled wood such as crates, scaffolding planks or railway sleepers. With the addition of beautiful victorian brackets, which are highly decorative, this lifts the wooden shelves from ordinary to extraordinary. I also love the Indian carving which has been used in one of these images and the small farmhouse style stools which have been wall hung and used as shelves.
This lovely collection of pottery and porcelain needs no distractions and the simple white painted fitted shelving is a perfect backdrop. What does add interest to the room though, is the rustic wooden table, the woven basket and the linen covered chairs with upholstery nail details, it’s all in the texture.
